Music festivals: places and sounds

Pistoia Festival Blues – (Pistoia, the month of July)

The Pistoia Festival Blues, one of the most important and well-known musical events in Italy and Europe which every year sees a succession of talented musicians take to the stage, takes place in Pistoia in July. Over its 30 year history, the festival, with its roots in the blues, has welcomed onto its stage in piazza del Duomo such great artists as Muddy Waters, BB King, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Lou Reed, Carlos Santana, Ray Charles, Patti Smith, Miriam Makeba, Pino Daniele, Zucchero, Albert Collins, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne and many others. Every year the festival attracts thousands of fans. For three days Pistoia takes on a new face, becoming a crossroads of international culture, with gaily-coloured stalls and street performers livening up its streets.

Itinerari Musicali - Festival Sentieri Acustici (July/August)

In the summer, promoted by the Council’s department of culture, the 'Itinerari Musicali' is held, an initiative now in its twentieth year which places emerging artists alongside more well-known names. Festival Sentieri Acustici is a travelling summer event which takes place in the second half of August in the Pistoia mountains and which offers world music concerts, singer-songwriters, ethnic music, jazz and rock all in the evocative squares and corners of the Pistoia region. Alongside the concerts, the festival also offers fringe activities such as courses and workshops and guided walks around the area.
