Fucecchio Marsh

The Basin is situated in the Valdinievole, south of the Pistoia Apennine, between the Montalbano and the Colline delle Cerbaie. This is a marsh pdulecanale.jpgwhere plants used to various different climates grow in a single place and which also plays a fundamental role in the migratory paths between the Tyrrhenian coast and inland; here, during the course of the year, over 190 species of bird can be observed, of which at least 70 are nesting.

Of particular interest to naturalists are the herons, that in breeding season make up the most important nesting colony in southern central Italy, both in terms of the number of nesting pairs (up to 800) and of the simultaneous presence of 4 species: the Black-crowned Night Heron, the Little Egret, the Squacco Heron and the Cattle Egret.
